Metro Trains Melbourne (Metro) commenced its metropolitan rail franchise on 30 November 2009, in late 2017 the company was awarded a new franchise to run the railway until 2024. Metro operates 226 six carriage trains across 998 kilometres of track, transporting 450,000 customers each day In Melbourne.

Metro, or Metro Trains Melbourne, is a consortium of rail and construction businesses, all of which have unrivalled credentials. The Metro team draws on the strengths and experience of three leading rail industry organisations: MTR Corporation, John Holland Group and UGL Rail.

Since Inception Metro has advanced all key metrics of the railway including punctuality, passenger satisfaction, fleet reliability, asset management, safety and security. All of this whilst managing significant growth in patronage, the embedment of new systems and technology, introduction of more services, higher train frequencies and major disruption due to the unprecedent construction activity on the rail network. Under the guise of Metro.

  • Punctuality has climbed from 85.9% to 92.46%.
  • Network Patronage has climbed from 150m to 236m trips per annum
  • First Railway in Australia to successfully achieve ISO 55000 international standard on asset management
  • Safety on the railway has reduced to the world class figure of 0.82 injuries per million boardings


Construction Delivery Capability

In addition to operating the rail network, Metro is a construction and delivery partner for billions of dollars of brownfield and greenfield infrastructure projects throughout the Melbourne network. Metro employs a construction workforce of over 700 staff with a backlog in excess of $4B worth of projects. Projects undertaken by Metro in partnership include;


  • Mernda line Extension (8km track extension, 3 new stations and 2000 carparks)
  • Level crossing removal program 35 complete out of a total of 75
  • The new Melbourne Metro including 9km of new line with five underground stations
  • Design and commissioning inputs into the introduction of 65 high capacity metro trains
  • Rail Systems Alliance delivering high-capacity communications-base signaling upgrades
